Larry Scott was selected by the Sterling Heights Area Chamber of Commerce to receive the Step Above Award as businessperson volunteer of the year for 2007. The Step Above event recognizes several "unheralded" volunteers who have gone beyond the call of duty in doing community service in their communities in several different categories: student, senior citizen, community service organization, businessperson, and President's award. Larry Scott was recognized for his volunteer efforts as a businessman on behalf of Michigan Special Olympics, which supports year-round sports training and competition for more than 16,000 Special Olympics athletes in Michigan.
For the past 17 years, Larry has been an organizer, promoter, financial contributor, and participant in the Personal Watercraft Endurance Ride fundraiser for Special Olympics. The annual 5 day ride held each summer covers over 400 miles down the eastern coast of Michigan from Mackinaw City to Harsens Island. Each rider participant commits to making a minimum donation of $1,800, which can be raised from a variety of sources. Since 1991, Larry and his fellow Water Warriors have raised approximately $2 million for Special Olympics Michigan. Larry Scott has been a major reason for the event's continued success.
In addition to his personal contributions, O'Reilly Rancilio has donated office space for use by the Southeast Michigan Special Olympics office. In addition, Mr. Scott is involved in numerous other charitable activities and organizations, including St. Jude's Research Hospital, St. John's Hospital, and St. Joseph Hospital (now Henry Ford Macomb).
