Sharon DeWaele is an experienced municipal law attorney (including zoning, ordinance, drafting FOIA, Open Meetings Act, and District Court prosecution) who is currently serving as City Attorney for the City of Harper Woods and Richmond Township.
An experienced commercial litigator and probate law practitioner, Ms. DeWaele has worked on cases involving personal injury claims, civil rights violations, wrongful death, premises liability matters, and more. Along with municipalities, her clients include individuals, large corporations, and institutional entities.
An advocate for the communities she serves, Ms. DeWaele was part of a team that implemented a new Mental Health Court in Harper Woods. This court diverts select defendants with mental illness into supervised, community-based treatment. She also helped re-implement the successful Detroit Mercy Law internship program into 32nd District Court, allowing the community access to low-cost legal service and additional learning opportunities for future attorneys.
She is the member of the State Bar of Michigan, U.S. District Court for the Eastern and Western Districts of Michigan, the Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals, the United States Supreme Court, Macomb County Bar Association, and the Macomb County Probate Bar Association.
Ms. DeWaele enjoys exercise; spending time with her husband, children, and 12 grandchildren; and relaxing at her cabin in Gladwin.
