2022 Year in Review

2022 marked many successes for the attorneys and staff at O’Reilly Rancilio, and we are happy to present just a few of the notable achievements below. Our legal team is proud to have served municipalities, business owners, and residents of Macomb County and southeast Michigan throughout the year and we look forward to a successful 2023!

January

Marc Kaszubski was among the presenters at the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce Small Business Symposium, where he discussed internet law. Marc’s presentation focused on the legal dangers of posting unlicensed images on social media and company websites and other topics.

February

Attorney Brian Grant presented “Estate Planning Mistakes and How to Avoid Them” at the Sterling Heights Senior Center. Brian noted a few of the more common mistakes, including failing to fund a trust and failing to secure important estate planning documents.

March

Attorney Don DeNault and members of the O’Reilly Rancilio Municipal Practice Group were appointed to serve as assistant corporation counsel for the City of Dearborn Heights.

Lori Smith joined the O’Reilly Rancilio legal team as a shareholder. Smith leads the firm’s Family Law practice group.

Attorney Scott Ruark marked victories in the courtroom with a “not guilty” victory for his client in a jury trial; a dismissal of an attempted arson charge; and the successful termination of a personal protection order.

May

Attorneys Don DeNault and Marc Kaszubski assisted the 41A District Court with the development of its new Sobriety Court program.

June

O’Reilly Rancilio attorneys Donald P DeNault Jr., Marc Kaszubski, Alyssa Ericson, and Hayley Tomich participated in the Sterling Heights Police Department Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) Golf Outing. The event was a fundraiser for the FOP charities, which include several community service programs. O’Reilly Rancilio municipal attorneys assist the Sterling Heights Police Department and other law enforcement agencies with their legal needs and are proud to support the department.

O’Reilly Rancilio attorney Alyssa Ericson played a role in the “Every 15 Minutes: A Sterling Heights Story,” a video that demonstrates the harsh consequences of drinking and driving. Alyssa serves as the prosecuting attorney in the movie, which happens to be part of her job in real life. O’Reilly Rancilio supports the Sterling Heights police and fire departments, 41-A District Court, Henry Ford Health System, Sterling Heights TV, and the Warren Consolidated School District as they raise awareness about participating in this dangerous, illegal activity. Attorney Brian Grant hosted a seminar at the Madison Heights Active Adult Center where he offered tips on how to avoid estate planning mistakes.

Attorney Scott Ruark was selected as a National Trial Lawyers' Top 40 under 40 Trial Lawyer in the state of Michigan in the criminal defense category. This honor is given to only the top 40 under 40 attorneys for their superior qualifications, trial results, and leadership as young criminal defense and civil plaintiff lawyers. Membership in The National Trial Lawyers 40 Under 40 provides recognition to these distinguished attorneys and provides essential legal news, information, and continuing education to trial lawyers across the United States.

Massimo Badalamenti joined the firm’s Litigations and Disputes practice group as an associate. Massimo focuses his practice on general litigation and disputes, commercial litigation, insurance coverage and claims, and creditors’ rights.

August

Six O’Reilly Rancilio attorneys were named to the peer-selected Super Lawyers list, including Chuck Turnbull, Larry Scott, Craig Schoenherr, Marc Kaszubski, James Sarconi, and Jim Thomas. Super Lawyers is a rating of outstanding lawyers from more than 70 practice areas who have earned a high degree of peer recognition and professional achievement. The annual selections are made using a statewide survey of lawyers, an independent research evaluation of candidates, and peer reviews by practice area. The Super Lawyers lists are published nationwide in Super Lawyers Magazine.

September

Attorney John Bartley spoke at the State Bar of Michigan Real Property Law Academy event titled “Residential Leasing & Anatomy of a Residential Transaction” over two days in September in Grand Rapids.

The formal investiture ceremony for Lori Smith, who was sworn in as the 94th president of the Macomb County Bar Association earlier in 2022, was held in September. Lori leads the O'Reilly Rancilio Family Law practice group.

Marc Kaszubski, vice president of the Sterling Heights Drug Free Coalition, was among the presenters at Sterling Heights High School during a school-wide assembly highlighting the dangers and potential ramifications of using vaping products.

Attorney Keith Jablonski was featured in the Sterling Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce podcast titled “Chamber Connection” where he discussed post-pandemic landlord-tenant law.

November

Attorney Lori Smith was featured in the Detroit Legal News where she discussed her legal career, her many community contributions, and her role as president of the Macomb County Bar Association.

Gary Collins, of counsel attorney at O’Reilly Rancilio, was named a Top Lawyer by Dbusiness magazine in the Labor & Employment Law category.
