The state of Michigan will likely see an increase in the collaboration of various medical professionals practicing together due to new legislation.

Governor Gretchen Whitmer recently signed a bill package into law that amends the Michigan Limited Liability Company Act and the Business Act to allow one or more individuals licensed to engage in the practice of chiropractic are to organize a Professional Limited Liability Company (PLCC) or a Professional Corporation (PC) with one or more other individuals licensed in the practice of:

  • Chiropractic;
  • Medicine;
  • Osteopathic medicine;
  • Surgery;
  • Podiatric medicine; or
  • One or more licensed physician’s assistants (provided a physician licensed to engage in the practice of medicine or osteopathic medicine and surgery was also a participant).

Before the signing of the law, Michigan law required all owners and managers of a PC or PLLC that renders a professional service included in the Public Health Code to be licensed or legally authorized in Michigan to render the same professional service.

The amendments to the Act mean more licensees in the professions of medicine and chiropractic care may merge to provide collaborative care to patients. Practices that integrate the knowledge and skills of varying professionals can offer patients both convenience and cost savings. Another advantage, proponents stated, is that chiropractic care offers conservative pain management options without the use of pharmaceuticals, especially opioids.

Opioid addiction continues to remain a problem, as overdose deaths in Michigan increased more than 16 percent from 2019 to 2020, to an all-time high of approximately 2,770.
