Several high-profile couples announced their split in 2023, including Meryl Streep and Don Gummer; Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello; Hugh Jackman and Deborra-Lee Furness; Kevin Costner and Christine Baumgartner; and others. While most of these splits occurred earlier in the year, the stressors of the holidays could cause others who already have issues in their marriage to consider calling it quits. But is it a good idea to divorce during the holidays?
For some couples, waiting to file for a divorce is not an option. Those in abusive or toxic marriages should start divorce proceedings without hesitation, even if that means relying on the help of law enforcement and divorce attorneys.
Even those who are not in abusive relationships may find the holidays difficult to handle. The stressful holiday season may lead to disagreements, especially for couples who are already in contentious relationships. It may be difficult to pretend to be a couple, even for the few holiday get-togethers that married couples are likely to attend.
In addition, filing for a divorce during the holidays may be a good idea if the individual has supportive family members, who are likely to provide additional support during the season.
Last, a couple may want to consider filing for a divorce during the holiday season, but keeping the news quiet until after the start of the new year. Depending on the circumstances surrounding the divorce, the process from beginning to end could take months and those who are certain about divorce may want to start the process.
For some couples who have children, announcing divorce during the holiday season is traumatic and could rob the children of the wonderment of the season. If possible, certain couples may wish to wait until after the new year, to allow the children to enjoy the holiday season with both parents just one more time.
For spouses who have been separated or who have contemplated divorce for a while, waiting just a month after the holidays may be possible. This may help reduce some of the stress that often accompanies the season and may also make financial sense. Divorce is expensive for most couples, and with the added expenses of gift-giving, travel, and hosting parties, an end-of-the-year divorce may not be financially possible.
While some relatives may be supportive of a divorcing couple, others may attempt to interfere to prevent the divorce. Since the holidays often bring families together, a couple considering a divorce may wish to file and announce the uncoupling after the season to keep meddling family and friends at bay.
Due to tax implications, timing a divorce to be final near the beginning of the year, if possible, may make financial sense for some couples.
