The use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) is skyrocketing, especially in the classroom. While AI may be a valuable tool for teachers and students, the use of it does have drawbacks.
A recent study by "eSchool News" found that 67 percent of middle and high school students use AI to help with their schoolwork. Many students report that they utilize AI in ways that are not allowed, leaving some school administrators, teachers, students, and parents to wonder, what policies are in place regarding AI in schools?
Launched on Nov. 30, 2022, Chat GPT (Generative Pre-Trained Transformer) is a new generation of AI that generates text, images, and video on demand. ChatGPT learns using a database of online writing, digital books, and additional media.
Technology is moving quickly, meaning school districts must develop and continue to update policies to keep up with changing guidance and regulations.
President Joe Biden recently signed an executive order establishing new guidelines for AI. The wide-ranging order, which covers nearly every industry, directs some federal agencies to develop policies that will address the use of AI in the classroom.
Specifically, the Executive Order requires the U.S. Department of Commerce to develop guidance for content authentication and watermarking to clearly label AI-generated content. In addition, the Order calls on Congress to pass legislation aimed at data privacy concerns regarding AI.
